The Gospel of John is perhaps the best known and best loved of the four Gospels; if not the best loved book in the New Testament. It is the record of four visits made by our Lord to Jerusalem on the occasion of the feasts, and then what happened when he came back north. As to its meaning, John’s Gospel is about conversion to Christ. We have missed its point, if we do not soon become aware that it is not meant simply to entertain us as literature, nor stimulate us with intellectual exercises. Its intention is to lead us personally to faith in the Son of God, the Word, who was with God in the beginning but became flesh and dwelt among us.
